French National Assembly commission faces collapse over rapporteur dispute
The parliamentary commission of inquiry tasked with investigating the violence of October 17 and 18 is facing potential dissolution following a political deadlock at the French National Assembly. The crisis stems from a dispute over the distribution of rapporteur positions.
Following a secret ballot, the three rapporteur roles were assigned to Roger Vicot (PS), Pouria Amirshahi (Greens), and Agnès Firmin Le Bodo (Horizons). The Rassemblement National (RN) has boycotted the proceedings, with Marine Le Pen accusing the assembly of maneuvering to exclude her party. In response to the impasse, Agnès Firmin Le Bodo announced her withdrawal from the role to maintain credibility, stating that work cannot proceed without a significant portion of the assembly.
Efforts to resolve the crisis through a conference of presidents failed on Tuesday. While one proposal suggested creating a fourth rapporteur position specifically for the RN, this move was met with opposition from left-wing groups. Vincent Caure, president of the Laws Commission, noted that the inquiry is currently blocked by partisan disputes, while La France Insoumise leader Mathilde Panot criticized the RN for undermining a necessary investigation.
