French National Assembly pavilion plan draws near‑100,000 signatures
The French National Assembly intends to replace its historic stone pavilion, built in 1888, with a contemporary glass structure. The project, promoted by Assembly president Yaël Braun‑Pivet, would create a reception pavilion that includes a shop, a cafeteria and educational spaces. It is slated to be built within a UNESCO World Heritage‑listed site in the 7th arrondissement of Paris.
Heritage‑defence association Sites & Monuments, led by president Julien Lacaze, opposes the plan, arguing that the glass building would break the symmetry of the Seine quays, introduce an inappropriate material and permanently demolish a historic monument. The association cites an alternative proposal by the Japanese firm SANAA that would retain the 1888 pavilion and add a stone extension.
A petition against the project has attracted almost 100,000 signatures, including TV presenter Stéphane Bern. Critics also point to the estimated €53 million construction cost, which would be financed from the Assembly’s reserves.
