French National Assembly sanctions four deputies over racism accusations

The Bureau of the French National Assembly has issued disciplinary sanctions against four deputies following a heated incident in the chamber on July 7. The sanctions follow accusations of racism directed at Hélène Laporte, a National Rally (RN) deputy who was presiding over the session.

The controversy arose when Laporte confused deputy Farida Amrani with Green Party deputy Sabrina Sebaihi. Left-wing members, including Alma Dufour, Farida Amrani, and Matthias Tavel from La France Insoumise (LFI), as well as Benjamin Lucas-Lundy from the Greens, accused Laporte of discriminatory behavior during the exchange.

The Bureau decided to issue simple reprimands to Alma Dufour, Farida Amrani, and Matthias Tavel. Benjamin Lucas-Lundy received a more severe sanction: a formal reprimand recorded in the minutes, resulting in the loss of one-quarter of his parliamentary indemnity for one month.

According to a member of the Bureau, the disciplinary actions target the manner in which the deputies challenged the presiding officer rather than the validity of the racism accusations themselves. Laporte has denied any discriminatory intent.
