France National Assembly shifts focus to Social Security budget

The French National Assembly has suspended debates on the state budget to begin examining the 2027 Social Security financing bill. This shift follows a week of intense legislative activity where deputies modified the state budget, increasing the projected deficit by 10 billion euros compared to the government's initial draft.

The government aims to reduce the Social Security deficit from 21.8 billion euros in 2026 to 12.7 billion euros by 2027. Proposed measures to achieve this include saving 1 billion euros on sick leave expenses and reducing employer social security contribution exemptions to recover 3.7 billion euros. Other considerations involve adjustments to retiree tax abatements and health expenditure controls.

Legislative discussions are occurring in a highly polarized environment, six months ahead of the presidential election. The Cour des comptes has urged Parliament to adhere to the 12.7 billion euro deficit target to avoid a perilous financial situation for social finances.
