French Navy begins at-sea trials of Rampart modular launcher

The French Navy has commenced at-sea trials for the Rampart modular multi-purpose launcher, developed by Naval Group. The system was observed undergoing testing aboard a Mistral-class amphibious assault ship off the coast of Toulon.

Designed to defend vessels against aerial drones, unmanned surface vehicles, and fast attack craft, the Rampart system features a modular architecture. It can carry four interchangeable ammunition modules with a combined payload of approximately 1,000 kg. These modules can hold various payloads, including rockets, missiles, grenades, decoys, or underwater weapons. The system is capable of operating autonomously or integrating with a ship’s combat management system.

The current primary weapon associated with the system is the Thales 68mm rocket, with a laser-guided version capable of engaging drones and small surface craft at a range of up to five kilometers. While the initial engagement envelope is estimated at approximately eight kilometers, the final range will depend on the specific effector used. Following land-based trials at the Canjuers Army range in May, these maritime tests represent a significant step in the system's development.
