French Navy intercepts DF Peak tanker in Indian Ocean

The French Navy has intercepted the DF Peak, an oil tanker suspected of being part of Russia’s 'ghost fleet' used to bypass international sanctions. The operation took place in the Indian Ocean, more than 450 nautical miles south of the French territory of Réunion.

President Emmanuel Macron confirmed the interception, stating that France is committed to combating the 'ghost fleet' globally. An inspection of the vessel's documents by the French military confirmed suspicions of irregularities regarding its flag. Although the tanker is currently flying the flag of Benin, it is listed on European Union sanctions lists and is suspected of operating under a false identity to evade restrictions on Russian fuel exports.

The DF Peak, a 110,000-ton tanker built in 2006, has undergone several identity changes, previously operating as the NS Captain and the Kaliningrad. Following the boarding, the vessel was diverted from its route under French Navy escort to Réunion for further judicial verification and analysis of its cargo and financial records.

The Russian embassy in Paris has condemned the seizure, labeling the action 'piracy' and a violation of international law, while noting that they are investigating whether any Russian citizens are among the crew.
