French Parliament report urges order for second nuclear aircraft carrier

A parliamentary report in France is calling on the government to order a second next-generation nuclear-powered aircraft carrier by 2029. The report, authored by MP Yannick Chenevard for the National Assembly's Committee on National Defense and Armed Forces, argues that a second vessel is necessary to ensure a permanent sea presence for carrier strike groups.

Currently, the French Navy relies solely on the nuclear-powered Charles de Gaulle. The report notes that routine and extensive maintenance cycles frequently leave France without carrier capability. While the Charles de Gaulle is expected to be decommissioned around 2038 when the future France Libre enters service, lawmakers rejected options to extend its service life beyond that date.

Technical challenges, including permanent changes to reactor vessels from decades of neutron flux and difficulties inspecting deep hull areas for corrosion, make extension impractical. A fourth major overhaul, including a fuel element change, is estimated to cost two billion euros while offering only a few additional years of service. Instead, Chenevard advocates for the direct construction of a sister ship to the France Libre to secure industrial and financial advantages.
