French pension errors and timing impact retiree benefits

Administrative errors and timing issues are significantly impacting retirement pensions in France. According to the Cour des comptes, approximately one in nine newly awarded pensions contains a financial error, a figure that has risen from nearly one in ten in 2024. In more than three-quarters of these cases, the errors result in lower payments for the retiree.

These discrepancies are often caused by aging IT systems that fail to communicate effectively between different agencies, as well as simplified controls during faster processing. Complex career paths—including periods of unemployment, short-term assignments, or working abroad—further complicate the accurate reconstruction of insurance quarters. Women are noted as being particularly exposed to these risks.

Additionally, for individuals born in 1963, the specific timing of retirement liquidation can drastically affect long-term benefits. Due to the technicalities of how coefficients and insurance quarters are applied, delaying retirement from September 2026 to January 2027 could potentially increase the total pension by 4% to 5%.
