France retirement updates: benefit changes and pension revaluations

Several changes are impacting retirement benefits and social assistance in France. A decade-long derogation allowing the simultaneous receipt of the AAH (disability allowance) and ASS (specific solidarity allowance) is set to expire on December 31, 2026. Approximately 15,000 people may face monthly decreases of several hundred euros and a potential loss of pension rights, as the ASS is linked to unemployment periods that count toward retirement.

Regarding complementary pensions, Agirc-Arrco is facing negotiations in October 2026 to determine revaluations. While the scheme holds reserves exceeding 90 billion euros, a significant increase is not guaranteed. Current projections suggest a revaluation of approximately 2% based on inflation, though this remains subject to social partner agreements.

Additionally, a new calculation method for mothers' pensions is being implemented. For those retiring from September 2026, the calculation will shift from the best 25 years of salary to the best 24 or 23 years depending on the number of children. Due to technical delays in updating pension systems, these beneficiaries will continue to receive payments under the old formula until a catch-up adjustment occurs in 2027.
