French police warn of subtle burglary reconnaissance signs

French police and gendarmerie have issued warnings regarding a seasonal increase in burglaries as autumn approaches. The shorter days and earlier onset of darkness create opportunities for criminals, particularly between 5:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., when dark homes signal that occupants are away at work or commuting.

Authorities note that most intrusions are not random but follow a methodical reconnaissance phase. Criminal networks evaluate neighborhood vulnerabilities and monitor resident routines to test access points. To communicate between accomplices and confirm a home remains unoccupied, burglars use subtle physical markers on doors, gates, pillars, and intercoms. While traditional chalk markings are still used, newer methods have become increasingly discreet and difficult for the untrained eye to detect.
