Fabien Roussel announces 2027 presidential candidacy

Fabien Roussel, the national secretary of the French Communist Party (PCF), has officially announced his candidacy for the 2027 presidential election. The announcement was made during a television appearance on TF1, following an internal party vote where 72.06% of members supported his bid.

Roussel, the mayor of Saint-Amand-les-Eaux, aims to present a “project of rupture” focused on increasing purchasing power, supporting workers, and strengthening industrial production. His campaign slogan, “Vivre!” (Live!), emphasizes themes of social and economic change. This marks his second attempt at the presidency after receiving 2.28% of the vote in 2022.

The announcement highlights ongoing divisions within the French left. While Roussel seeks to build an autonomous communist electoral space, other factions, such as La France Insoumise, have previously criticized his refusal to support unified left-wing candidates. His candidacy joins a crowded field of potential contenders, including figures from the socialist and ecological movements.
