French political leaders clash over high school protests
Political tensions in France are escalating as Jean-Luc Mélenchon, the La France Insoumise (LFI) presidential candidate for 2027, targets former Prime Minister Gabriel Attal regarding ongoing high school protests.
Mélenchon has accused Attal of being personally responsible for the social unrest, citing Attal’s previous role as the rapporteur for the law creating Parcoursup, the controversial post-baccalaureate orientation platform. Mélenchon claims the system has left 100,000 graduates without clear prospects and has pledged to abolish the platform if elected.
Attal responded by calling Mélenchon’s rhetoric “cynical” and an “insult to the future of our youth,” accusing LFI of using demagoguery rather than offering solutions.
Amidst this political friction, Nathanaël Combary, an 18-year-old leader of the Renouveau Lycéen union and a prominent figure in the student movement, has reportedly faced cyberbullying. The harassment followed social media comments from Mélenchon and implications from LFI deputy Paul Vannier, who suggested Combary was a political puppet for the current administration.
