French political leaders propose competing strategies for 2027

Three former French Prime Ministers—Gabriel Attal, Édouard Philippe, and François Bayrou—are presenting competing strategies to unify the political center ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Gabriel Attal is pursuing an autonomous candidacy through his party, Renaissance, having already established a campaign team led by Franck Riester, Fanny Anor, and Maxime Cordier. His local organization is expanding, including the appointment of Allan Bouamrane as a departmental referent in the Rhône to coordinate local networks and prepare for a major meeting in Lyon on October 10.

Édouard Philippe proposes a meeting in early November to bring together various families of the center and right to discuss programmatic convergences and prepare for subsequent legislative elections. He advocates for a rapprochement that could include groups ranging from MoDem to parts of Les Républicains.

François Bayrou, leader of MoDem, suggests a broader primary system for the “grand fleuve central.” His proposal involves allowing candidates with at least ten parliamentary sponsorships to participate in a campaign throughout November and December, with a first round of voting in mid-January and a second round in early February.
