French political shifts and unrest pose risks to EU and US
Political analysts and experts have raised concerns regarding the impact of shifting political landscapes and civil unrest in France on both European and international stability.
At a Georgetown University event, Financial Times senior editor Victor Mallet warned that the rising popularity of the far-right Rassemblement National (RN) party could fundamentally alter France’s relationship with the European Union. Mallet noted that if leaders such as Marine Le Pen or Jordan Bardella were to take power, the party might seek to reduce immigration, reimpose border controls, and significantly decrease French financial support for Ukraine. Such a shift could potentially destabilize the broader EU’s collective war-funding efforts.
Separately, Nile Gardiner of The Heritage Foundation warned that recent riots in France, driven by a coalition of far-left and Islamist groups, could serve as a blueprint for unrest in the United States. While protests initially centered on education funding and the cost of living, officials including Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu have attributed much of the violence to far-left movements. Gardiner characterized the unrest as a dangerous combination of socialist, communist, and Islamist forces targeting Western societal structures.
