French Polynesia delegation heads to UN for information mission request
A delegation of representatives from French Polynesia is traveling to New York to present a transpartisan resolution to the United Nations Fourth Committee. The resolution, which was voted on by 53 out of 57 representatives in Tarahoi, requests an official UN information mission to the territory.
While the move represents an unprecedented united front between various political factions, including both autonomists and independence supporters, internal differences remain. Tematai Le Gayic, president of the A Fano Ti’a group, stated that the goal is to establish a shared method and process to ensure Polynesians can decide their own future through a referendum. The Tapura Huiraatira group is also supporting the initiative, with representative Tepuaraurii Teriitahi expressing a desire for a UN committee to observe the local reality firsthand.
Despite this cooperation on the procedural front, political tensions persist. Osacar Temaru of the Tavini Huiraatira party has criticized the text, labeling it as a series of “combines.”
