French Polynesia faces rising obesity and health costs

Obesity rates in French Polynesia have risen significantly, with the proportion of overweight adults increasing from 40% to 51% over the last 11 years. Additionally, one in four adolescents is classified as obese.

The health crisis has severe economic and medical implications. Approximately 46,000 residents, or 17% of the population, are on long-term sick leave, costing the local Social Security system 335 million euros annually. The prevalence of obesity is linked to increased rates of diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.

In response, the Polynesian government is developing a prevention plan for 2026–2031. This strategy aims to address sedentary lifestyles, tobacco use, diet, and economic precariousness. Proposed measures include taxing fatty, salty, and sugary products, promoting healthy local food, and encouraging physical activity within workplaces.
