French potato production expected to drop 23% in 2026

French potato production is expected to see a significant decline in 2026 following a record surplus in 2025. The UNPT anticipates a 23% drop in conservation potato production, representing a loss of nearly 2 million tonnes.

This decline is driven by two main factors: a deliberate 10% reduction in planting areas to rebalance the market after last year's overproduction, and a sharp drop in yields caused by extreme heatwaves and water deficits. Average national yields are estimated to fall to 37.4 t/ha, down from 43.5 t/ha in 2025.

Producers, including the group Top Pom, have noted that while demand remains buoyant, storage will present a major challenge. Heatwaves have caused issues such as severe sprouting, which may complicate the ability to provide a stable product for consumers. Unirrigated areas are expected to be particularly impacted regarding both yield and quality.
