Rassemblement National official threatens to cut Ukraine aid
Louis Aliot, vice president of the Rassemblement National (RN), has sparked significant political controversy by stating that the party would ‘turn off the tap’ of French aid to Ukraine if they gain power in the 2027 presidential election. Aliot argued that France's healthcare, education, and economic systems are currently stretched to their limits, questioning the continued funding of weapons.
Political rivals have reacted sharply to these comments. Edouard Philippe, a center-right candidate, accused the RN of ‘serving Russia’ and warned that weakening Ukraine threatens the security of both France and Europe. Gabriel Attal, leader of Renaissance, further characterized the RN as a ‘party of the foreign’ and suggested that withdrawing support would allow Vladimir Putin to win.
In response, Marine Le Pen criticized the international diplomatic record of her opponents, specifically citing Edouard Philippe's past hosting of Russian officials. While the RN maintains it condemns Russian aggression, Le Pen has advocated for a ‘great peace conference’ to reach a diplomatic solution to the conflict.
