French firefighters launch six-week national strike
Professional firefighters in France have launched a national mobilization lasting from September 8 to October 20. The strike movement, involving eight unions, aims to pressure the government regarding the modernization of civil security.
Key demands include increased financial and material resources for Departmental Fire and Rescue Services (SDIS), massive recruitment of professional personnel, and better health protections for staff. The unions are seeking a law that provides structural changes rather than just symbolic updates, particularly following intense summer wildfire seasons.
The timing coincides with the presentation of a civil security modernization bill and the upcoming examination of the finance law. While the strike includes potential work stoppages, emergency services are expected to remain functional as professional firefighters may be requisitioned by prefects to ensure public safety continuity.
