French publishing market faces contraction and strategic shifts

The French publishing sector is experiencing a period of contraction and strategic adaptation. According to data from the Syndicat national de l’édition, the turnover for French publishers fell by 0.6% in 2025 to €2.88 billion, while sales volumes decreased by 1.5% to 420 million copies.

In response to a tightening market, the Piktos group has launched a new editorial brand, Lune noire, focused on fiction. The brand aims to categorize stories into specific segments such as contemporary francophone, romance, feel-good, and thriller, including a niche positioning in “esoteric romance.”

The upcoming literary season shows a slight decline in total releases, with 461 novels expected between August and October compared to 484 last year. While French novels remain stable at 344 titles, foreign translations have decreased to 117 due to rising costs for rights and translation. Despite these shifts, high-profile authors like Amélie Nothomb continue to drive interest, and the Jacques-Chirac Media Library in Troyes is hosting exhibitions and workshops to engage readers during this period.
