French regional authorities launch biodiversity and democratic initiatives
In the Pays de la Loire region, the Brière, Loire-Anjou-Touraine, Marais poitevin, and Normandie-Maine regional natural parks are preparing for the 2027-2029 contract period. Following a review of the 2024-2026 cycle, the region is focusing on five priorities: biodiversity preservation, climate change adaptation, sustainable development, local resource valorization, and citizen mobilization.
In Brittany, the Regional Council has launched a new call for expressions of interest to create regional nature reserves. Building on a 2020 initiative that established three reserves, this new call sets higher requirements, including a minimum site area of 100 hectares, land control, and considerations for marine spaces and climate change. Successful projects will receive ongoing regional support for management and education.
Additionally, the Brittany region is conducting a public consultation via the Make.org platform, inviting residents to propose ways to strengthen democracy in 140 characters or less. The submission period ends on October 31, 2026, with voting scheduled for mid-November. The regional government has committed to transparency regarding how these proposals will be processed in early 2027.
