French researchers uncover brain mechanism behind childhood odor memories

A team of scientists from France’s CNRS, led by Nathalie Mandairon at the University of Lyon, has identified the olfactory bulb as a key brain structure that revives childhood odor‑linked memories. The study, published in PLOS Biology, shows that scents encountered early in life create lasting imprints in specific neurons, which can be re‑activated later in adulthood, triggering emotional and pleasure circuits in the amygdala and related regions.

The researchers combined data from human volunteers with experiments on mice, demonstrating that early‑life odors leave durable traces that influence memory retrieval. Their findings provide a neurobiological explanation for the “Proust’s Madeleine” phenomenon, where a smell or taste can instantly bring back vivid, emotional memories from early childhood.
