French rugby adopts player protection measures for 2027 World Cup
The French Rugby Federation (FFR) and the Ligue Nationale de Rugby (LNR) have introduced new regulations for the Top 14 to align with international standards and prepare for the 2027 Rugby World Cup.
To protect key national talent, a “protected list” of 33 premium players has been established. These players will receive specific rest periods, such as a weekend off every four matches or two match days off every eight weeks. In exchange, these players will be limited to nine international tests leading up to the 2027 tournament, covering the Nations Championship, the Six Nations, and preparation matches.
Additionally, the Top 14 will revert to a system of eight permanent replacements per match, moving away from the previous experimental rule of twelve changes. Under the new rules, players who are substituted cannot return to the field except in specific cases involving front-row injuries, bleeding, or concussion assessments. The changes aim to increase effective playing time, reduce match interruptions, and place a higher emphasis on player endurance and physical conditioning.
