French rugby faces injury crisis and regulatory challenges

The Ligue Nationale de Rugby (LNR) is addressing a significant increase in player injuries across French clubs and the national team. The LNR president acknowledged the concerning trend, stating that while player health is a priority, there is no miracle solution for the inherent risks of the sport. He defended the Top 14 format against claims that it is the primary cause of the injury surge, suggesting instead that a reduction in the European calendar might be a more effective way to manage player workload.

Separately, Rugby Club Toulonnais (RCT) is facing potential regulatory sanctions. Currently, Toulon is the only professional club in the Top 14 and Pro D2 to fall below its required JIFF (joueurs issus des filières de formation) quota. After seven rounds of Top 14 play, the club is averaging 15.71 JIFF players per match, below the mandatory target of 16. Failure to meet this requirement by the end of the season could result in a penalty of up to six points being deducted in the following season.
