French schools reopen for 2026 academic year

The 2026 school year has commenced across various French regions, marked by differing demographic trends and local developments. In Maine-et-Loire, approximately 141,000 students returned to classes, representing a decrease of 2,700 students compared to 2025. This decline is most pronounced in primary education, which saw a loss of 1,728 pupils, while middle schools and high schools experienced smaller reductions.

Despite the overall drop in enrollment, certain primary schools in the department have seen the creation of additional teaching positions. The public sector currently educates about 81,000 students, while private contract schools account for 60,000.

In the Orne department, the Sacré-Cœur d’Athis school reported a stable enrollment of 95 students across four classes. The school has utilized the summer break to renovate its daycare facilities to create a more welcoming environment. New initiatives for the academic year include a school choir and a curriculum themed around the four elements: earth, water, air, and fire.
