French security forces debate role in domestic unrest
Discussions regarding the use of military forces for domestic order maintenance have emerged following violent incidents in France. One perspective calls for a ‘sacred union’ between the armed forces, gendarmes, and police to stand alongside the people and halt what is described as a program of national destruction. This view urges military personnel to remain loyal to the defense of the French people rather than following orders that might lead to violence against citizens.
Conversely, other arguments suggest that the military should not be viewed as a universal remedy for societal disorder. Proponents of this view argue that soldiers are neither trained nor equipped for domestic law enforcement, as their vocation is combat and national defense. Instead, they suggest that police and gendarmes are the appropriate forces for managing urban violence, provided they receive the necessary instructions, authority, and institutional support to act with firmness.
