French seniors' loss of autonomy: early signs and support measures

Health officials in France warn that early changes such as unintended weight loss, social isolation, difficulty managing medication or mail can signal the onset of loss of autonomy among seniors. The country recorded about 1.53 million senior social‑aid allocations by the end of 2024, underscoring a growing demand for support.

The April 8 2024 law prioritises home‑care for elderly people, and the Assurance Maladie now offers free preventive health checks for people aged 60‑65 and 70‑75 to catch physical or cognitive decline early. Experts also highlight three key areas to monitor: nutrition (adequate calcium, vitamin D and B12 intake), fall risk (which can start well before age 60 and trigger a cascade of injuries and loss of confidence), and sensory changes such as hearing or vision loss. Early detection allows interventions that may keep seniors living independently at home.
