French small businesses face economic strain and tax relief

Small business leaders in France are facing significant economic hardship, according to a survey by the Syndicat des Indépendants et des TPE (SDI). The report indicates that 61% of directors have seen a drop in turnover, 70% report shrinking net margins, and 66% have experienced a contraction in cash flow. The survey highlights a crisis of confidence, with 98% of respondents believing France is in an economic crisis.

Amidst these challenges, the SDI has welcomed a recent legislative development regarding business succession. The French National Assembly's finance commission adopted an amendment to the 2027 finance bill that eases tax rules for transferring businesses. This amendment maintains current regimes for successions and introduces a ten-year staggered payment option for certain transfers, preventing immediate tax burdens that could have jeopardized business takeovers.

SDI Secretary General Marc Sanchez noted that the correction is vital for the approximately 500,000 small businesses that may be transferred over the next decade. The survey also noted high levels of stress among entrepreneurs, with 88% reporting frequent or high stress, and 58% stating they would likely not choose to become business owners again if given the choice.
