French small businesses face survival crisis in 2026
French very small enterprises (TPE) are entering a survival phase due to a widespread crisis of confidence and economic instability, according to the third-quarter 2026 barometer from the Syndicat des Indépendants et des TPE (SDI).
An investigation of 1,378 business leaders reveals severe financial distress. Approximately 61% of respondents reported a decline in turnover, while 71% saw a contraction in net margins. Cash flow issues are widespread, with 66% reporting degradation and 55% facing specific liquidity difficulties. Notably, 42% of these businesses estimate their current reserves would last no more than three months if activity remains unchanged.
The psychological impact on entrepreneurs is significant. Nearly all surveyed leaders (98%) believe France is undergoing an economic crisis, and 93% anticipate further deterioration over the next year. This lack of visibility has halted investment, with 51% of leaders reporting they have postponed or abandoned investment projects. Furthermore, 88% of business owners report experiencing high levels of stress.
