French Socialists threaten censure over 2027 budget
French Socialist Party leader Olivier Faure has signaled a potential motion of censure against Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu’s 2027 budget if significant changes are not made. Despite previous compromises in 2026—which included suspending pension reforms and increasing student meal subsidies—Faure expressed reluctance to negotiate under current conditions.
Faure criticized the government for adopting policies aligned with the National Rally, such as reducing renewable energy subsidies and decreasing France’s contribution to the European Union. He emphasized that negotiation requires mutual effort, stating, “If nothing changes, we will censure” the government.
Meanwhile, the La France Insoumise (LFI) group has announced its intention to censure the government regardless of the budget, with plans to file a spontaneous motion in early October. LFI leader Mathilde Panot warned that if the National Rally fails to support a censure motion, it will be held accountable for the current administration's policies.
