Cameroon school year begins amid rural infrastructure and labor challenges
The 2026-2027 school year officially commenced in Cameroon on September 7, involving over eight million learners. While the government has emphasized digital learning and artificial intelligence in secondary education, the reopening is marked by significant disparities between urban and rural areas.
In rural regions such as Esse and Afanloum, teachers face severe challenges, including a lack of running water, stable electricity, and decent housing. Approximately 67.6% of primary school teachers work in these rural settings, where the school calendar often lags behind official dates due to logistical difficulties. To address some of these issues, local initiatives like the installation of small solar panels in pilot schools are being introduced to provide lighting for lesson preparation.
Beyond infrastructure, the education sector faces labor tensions. University teachers have threatened indefinite strikes, and many educators across the country are protesting the non-payment of examination allowances from the previous year. This creates a stark contrast between the official administrative ceremonies attended by government officials and the economic reality of the teaching workforce.
