French theater features modern Balzac adaptation and new comedy success

Recent theatrical productions in France have garnered positive attention, including a modern adaptation of Honoré de Balzac’s ‘Illusions perdues’ by the company Les Évadés. Directed by Paul Platel, this energetic reinterpretation utilizes contemporary farce, diverse musical styles ranging from jazz to 1980s pop, and shifting scenography to explore themes of power, ambition, and corruption through the rise and fall of Lucien Chardon.

Additionally, Sébastien Castro’s new play at the Théâtre des Variétés has been described as a major success. Directed by José Paul, the production is a classic boulevard comedy featuring a three-story setting and a cast of eccentric neighbors. The play is noted for its effective dialogue, comedic timing, and traditional comedic tropes that revitalized the genre for modern audiences.
