French universities featured in 2026 Shanghai Ranking
The 2026 Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) has released its latest results, highlighting the standing of several French institutions.
Université Grenoble Alpes (UGA) remains within the top 151-200 global tier, maintaining its position as one of the eight best-ranked institutions in France. While the university holds the sixth rank in France—tied with Aix-Marseille and Montpellier universities—this represents a decline from its peak in 2020 when it reached the top 100. UGA has maintained a presence in the ranking since 2003, citing its research visibility in fields such as physics, life sciences, and mathematics.
Meanwhile, the University of Montpellier has confirmed its position among the world's top 200 universities. Since entering the top 400 in 2016, the institution has seen a steady progression in its global standing, a trend attributed to its scientific strategy and research excellence.
