French youth embrace manual crafts in local workshops

In Pau, the Pointilleuses sewing-machine shop runs regular workshops for children and teenagers, drawing increasing numbers of participants. Instructor Alexandra Candau notes that online tutorials, the rise of up‑cycling and the Covid lockdown have spurred interest, with youngsters learning to repair and transform old fabrics into personal garments.

In Bayeux, the volunteer‑run association L’Outil en main Bayeux‑Bessin offers a rotating programme of manual‑skill classes—including sewing, electricity, electronics, carpentry and cooking—to about 25 young people. Founded in 2018 by retired professional Alain Boulay, the group aims to give children hands‑on experience and foster appreciation for traditional trades.
