Frente Amplio holds VIII Ordinary Congress in Uruguay

The Frente Amplio, Uruguay’s primary leftist political force, has commenced its VIII Ordinary Congress at Palacio Peñarol. Titled the ‘Compañero José “Pepe” Mujica’ Congress, the event opened with a tribute to the former president and focused on the theme ‘The future is built.’

Frente Amplio president Fernando Pereira addressed the assembly, emphasizing the need to preserve progressive achievements while responding to evolving social expectations. The congress aims to define the party’s role in relation to the government of Yamandú Orsi and to strengthen its organizational ties with popular sectors as it looks toward the 2029 electoral horizon.

Discussions during the event also touched on international solidarity, specifically regarding Palestine and Cuba, and the party’s anti-imperialist stance. Domestically, the party contrasted its record of job creation and poverty reduction with criticisms of the current administration’s economic policies and procurement irregularities.
