Argentine Senate partially approves Inviolability of Private Property Law
The Argentine Senate has granted partial approval to the Inviolability of Private Property Law, passing it with 37 votes in favor and 33 against. To secure the vote, the government was forced to remove two highly controversial chapters: one regarding foreign land ownership and another concerning fire management.
The approved text includes new provisions for an express eviction regime to accelerate the restitution of illegally occupied properties and modifies the expropriation system by requiring more restrictive interpretations of 'public utility'. It also establishes a 30% cap on compensation for loss of profits in expropriation cases and includes measures for the digitalization of property registries.
The legislative outcome has caused significant political friction. The government is now reviewing its legislative strategy, with Karina Milei ordering a political audit of future projects from the Ministry of Deregulation to avoid similar setbacks. Meanwhile, opposition leaders and provincial governors have leveraged the result to challenge the administration's agenda, particularly regarding land sovereignty and energy subsidies.
