Freshwater jellyfish appear in Bratislava lakes

Freshwater jellyfish have been observed in the lakes of Bratislava, specifically around areas such as Veľký Draždiak, Zlaté Piesky, and various gravel pits. Experts note that the presence of these organisms is a natural phenomenon linked to prolonged periods of high water temperatures in Europe.

While their appearance may be surprising, local authorities state that these jellyfish do not pose a significant threat to swimmers, as their stinging cells are too weak to damage human skin. Zoologist Ján Kaľavský from the State Nature Conservancy of Slovakia noted that jellyfish populations can fluctuate significantly, appearing in mass numbers in some years and disappearing in others.

Experts advise the public not to catch or touch the jellyfish due to their delicate bodies, and urge people not to move them to other water bodies to prevent the unintended spread of the species.
