Fresno County officials address public safety and water quality concerns
Fresno County Board of Supervisors Chairman Garry Bredefeld delivered a State of the County address titled ‘Building a Safer, Stronger Fresno County’ to a sold-out crowd. The speech focused on public safety, infrastructure, and healthcare investments. Bredefeld highlighted new ordinances targeting copper wire theft, catalytic converter theft, and illegal dog breeding, while also noting increased funding for behavioral health programs.
Separately, tensions rose during a Board of Supervisors meeting regarding water safety in Shaver Springs. Residents reported discolored water and expressed concerns over high levels of gross alpha, uranium, and manganese. While the county issued violation notices for these substances, officials stated there is no immediate public health risk and a state-funded consultant is seeking long-term solutions.
Supervisor Nathan Magsig addressed resident accusations by presenting videos of himself drinking from four different Shaver Springs wells. Magsig noted an iron taste in the water and suggested that discoloration in some homes might be caused by internal plumbing issues, though he acknowledged the presence of manganese and uranium in the supply.
