Fresno County transportation tax Measure S heads to November ballot

Measure S, a proposed 30-year transportation tax in Fresno County, will appear on the November midterm ballot. The measure seeks to replace the existing Measure C, which is set to expire in 2027, with a half-cent sales tax. Projections suggest the tax could generate over $5.5 billion in revenue over its lifetime.

Under the proposed plan, approximately 65% of funds would be dedicated to maintaining and improving local streets and roads, including bike and pedestrian infrastructure. Other allocations include public transit, regional connectivity, and specific funding for the Fresno Yosemite International Airport. The plan also includes provisions for free bus fares for seniors over 62 and active-duty military members.

The measure faces significant opposition from local leaders, including Fresno County Board of Supervisors Chairman Garry Bredefeld and several mayors. Opponents held a press conference to launch a campaign against the tax, characterizing it as a misuse of taxpayer funds and criticizing the heavy emphasis on public transportation and bike lanes. The controversy follows legal disputes regarding state legislation that overrode local decisions to delay the measure.
