Fresno Mayor Jerry Dyer Pushes Ballot Measure to Allow Third Term

Fresno Mayor Jerry Dyer announced he will seek a third consecutive term if a proposed ballot measure that would extend term limits to 12 years for the mayor and city council members is approved for the November election. The measure, sponsored by Dyer and City Council President Nelson Esparza, also seeks to bar officials who have already been termed out from running again for the same office.

The city council must vote to place the initiative on the ballot, after which a majority vote in November would be required to adopt the new limits. Under current rules, mayors and councilmembers may serve two consecutive four‑year terms. Dyer says the change would add stability and continuity to Fresno's government, allowing him to remain in office through 2032 if voters approve the proposal.
