Fresno Planning Commission approves Southeast Development Area plan

The Fresno Planning Commission has voted to approve staff recommendations for the Southeast Development Area (SEDA) plan. The multi-phased project covers approximately 9,000 acres and aims to add up to 45,000 housing units and create between 30,000 and 37,000 jobs.

The proposal has faced significant scrutiny. Opponents at the commission meeting raised concerns regarding environmental impacts, school enrollment, and the lack of transparent financial planning. Some residents specifically questioned the $4.3 billion infrastructure price tag and how the first phase, known as South SEDA, will be funded.

Mayor Jerry Dyer has characterized the project as a necessity to prevent neighboring cities, such as Clovis and Sanger, from capturing the area's growth through local agency actions. However, officials from Clovis and Sanger have expressed no interest in the SEDA project, and records suggest the threat of a land grab by those cities may not be supported by evidence.
