Fridays for Future holds nationwide climate protests across Austria

The Fridays for Future movement organized nationwide climate protests across Austria on October 16, 2026. Demonstrations took place in seven provincial capitals, including Vienna, Salzburg, Innsbruck, Linz, Bregenz, Graz, and Klagenfurt.

In Vienna, an estimated 10,000 people participated in a march from Praterstern to Maria-Theresien-Platz. Protesters demanded that Austria’s goal of climate neutrality by 2040 be legally anchored in the Climate Act and called for a climate roadmap extending beyond 2027. They also advocated for a halt to large-scale fossil fuel projects.

Environmental organizations such as WWF, Greenpeace, and Global 2000 expressed support for the movement. WWF emphasized the need for investments in climate-friendly mobility and nature protection, while Greenpeace called for an accelerated transition to renewable energy. Global 2000 specifically highlighted the environmental risks posed by the high electricity and water consumption of expanding data centers.
