Fridge and Freezer Care Tips for Heatwaves and Frost Buildup
When ambient temperatures rise for several days, refrigerators and freezers must work twice as hard, leading to higher energy use and increased wear. Keeping the fridge compartment at 0‑4 °C and the freezer at –18 °C is essential; users should verify temperatures with a thermometer rather than simply turning the thermostat to maximum. Position the appliance away from heat sources such as ovens or sunny windows, ensure adequate ventilation, and avoid over‑loading or leaving it almost empty, both of which impair air circulation and temperature stability.
To prevent or remove frost, a quick method uses aluminum foil and hot steam. After emptying and unplugging the unit, cover the iced areas with tightly pressed foil sheets, place a pot of very hot water inside, and close the door for about ten minutes. The steam‑heated foil conducts heat rapidly, softening the ice so it can be peeled away with a plastic spatula, saving electricity and avoiding damage. The article also advises limiting door openings, checking door seals, cooling food before freezing, and periodically defrosting once a thin ice layer appears.
