Friedberg battles oak procession moth infestation
The city of Friedberg in the Aichach-Friedberg district is facing a significant infestation of the oak procession moth. Following a mild winter and a dry spring, reports of nests have increased since early June, affecting various areas including Wulfertshausen and Haberskirch.
To combat the pest, local authorities have implemented a biological control strategy by installing approximately 100 nesting boxes to encourage birds like tits, which feed on caterpillars. While the nesting boxes have seen an 80 percent breeding success rate, officials note that this natural method alone has not provided complete protection, as some trees with existing nesting aids have still been affected.
