Friedrich Merz under fire over heat‑related deaths and chancellor stability concerns

The German health agency RKI estimates that about 9,600 heat‑related deaths occurred in the week of 22‑28 June, part of nearly 10,000 excess deaths attributed to the recent heat wave. Green Party parliamentary leader Katharina Dröge criticised Chancellor Friedrich Merz for remaining silent, calling the situation a “dramatic health emergency” and demanding an immediate programme for climate‑friendly cooling of care facilities.

Within Merz’s own CDU, growing dissent over his handling of a cabinet reshuffle and poor poll numbers ahead of September regional elections has sparked talk of a possible “Kanzler‑swap”. The prospect is linked to fears that the far‑right Alternative for Germany (AfD) could make significant gains, prompting some party members to consider replacing Merz after only a year in office.

Merz’s media appearances have also drawn attention. In a ZDF documentary, news presenter Christian Sievers interrupted Merz during a “heute journal” interview, highlighting the tense atmosphere in the newsroom. Additionally, a new RTL talk show “Am Tisch mit Friedrich Merz” will feature the chancellor discussing current political issues with citizens.

Critics have repeatedly described Merz as distant and unemotional, questioning his leadership style amid these multiple pressures.
