Friedrich Merz faces domestic criticism and international budget disputes

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is facing significant political pressure across multiple fronts. In a televised RTL interview, Merz engaged in a heated exchange with pediatrician Dr. Maria Bea Merscher, who accused him of breaking his oath of office by implementing destructive health expenditure cuts. Merz rejected these accusations, characterizing them as personal degradation, and argued that the reforms do not target insured citizens over the pharmaceutical industry.

Domestically, the SPD in the Ruhr region has issued a position paper criticizing Merz for a lack of respect and humility in his communication with citizens. This follows reports of low approval ratings for the Chancellor. Additionally, Merz has faced verbal criticism from AfD leader Alice Weidel, whom he dismissed.

On the international stage, Merz and leaders from several net-contributor EU nations, including Denmark, Finland, and Austria, are calling for a drastic reduction in the proposed EU budget, labeling the current Commission plans as unsustainable. Furthermore, the German government is reportedly preparing a ‘Zeitenwende 2.0’ response to a failed drone attack at Leipzig/Halle airport, which may include official attribution to Russia and new EU sanctions.
