Germany: Majority of voters expect Chancellor Merz to leave office early

A YouGov poll conducted for dpa reveals that a majority of German voters expect Chancellor Friedrich Merz to leave office before the 2029 federal elections. Specifically, 54 percent of respondents anticipate his departure before the end of his current mandate. Within this group, 36 percent expect him to remain through 2026 but depart before 2029, while 18 percent believe he will be replaced before the end of this year.

The survey also indicates a perceived decline in Merz’s authority. Approximately 67 percent of respondents believe recent personnel changes within the government and the CDU have not strengthened his leadership. When asked about potential successors, 25 percent of voters identified Hendrik Wüst, the Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia, as a more suitable candidate for chancellor, whereas only 9 percent view Merz as the best choice.

In economic circles, the BVMW has expressed concerns regarding leadership, with Geschäftsführer Christoph Ahlhaus warning that the coalition risks fracturing if Merz does not provide clearer direction. Additionally, industry groups like the BDI and HDE are calling for urgent structural reforms and economic relief to address fragile growth and rising insolvency rates.
