Friedrich Merz becomes emotional at German School Prize ceremony
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz became visibly emotional during the presentation of the ‘Deutscher Schulpreis’ in Berlin. The event, organized by the Robert Bosch Stiftung and the Heidehof-Stiftung, saw the Bertha-von-Suttner-Schule from Hessen win the main prize of 100,000 euros. Merz was moved to tears when students and teachers from the winning school embraced him on stage.
In his speech, Merz emphasized the importance of education and described teachers as ‘the most important professional group in our country.’ This statement prompted responses from educational unions; the Verband Bildung und Erziehung (VBE) noted that such recognition should lead to concrete actions, specifically advocating for the civil service status (Verbeamtung) of teachers to ensure stability in the school system.
The emotional display occurs amid a period of political pressure for Merz, with recent polling indicating high levels of dissatisfaction with his leadership. While some observers viewed his reaction as a rare moment of authenticity, others questioned his ability to maintain the necessary distance required by the office.
