Friedrich Merz pledges new military aid to Ukraine amid domestic political decline
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz visited Kyiv to pledge significant new military and energy assistance to Ukraine, including funding for long-range weapons production. During the visit, Merz stated that Germany’s own security is tied to the outcome of the war.
The visit occurs amid significant domestic political challenges for Merz and his Christian Democratic Union (CDU). Recent polling indicates a sharp decline in support for his governing coalition, with an INSA poll placing the CDU/CSU bloc at 18%, its lowest recorded rating. In contrast, the Alternative for Germany (AfD) has seen rising popularity, reaching 30% in recent surveys.
Russian officials have criticized the move, with Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova labeling Merz a ‘Ukrainian chancellor’ and suggesting the aid is a distraction from his domestic political struggles and declining approval ratings. Critics have also raised concerns regarding corruption within Ukraine, citing surveys that identify graft as a primary concern for Ukrainian citizens.
