Friedrich Merz reaffirms support for Israel and Ukraine

Friedrich Merz, leader of Germany’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU), reaffirmed the party’s unwavering support for Israel and Ukraine during a meeting with the Junge Union in Bonn. Merz stated that Germany stands against anyone who questions Israel’s right to exist, emphasizing that the country will not tolerate attempts to make antisemitism socially acceptable again.

Regarding regional security, Merz expressed continued support for Ukraine as it enters its fifth difficult winter, warning that Russia is prepared to escalate tensions. He cited discussions with the Polish Prime Minister as evidence that the security threat is real and imminent.

Merz also criticized political opponents, specifically the Alternative for Germany (AfD) and The Left, for downplaying these security risks. He argued that those seeking to move Germany toward the far-right or those engaging with extreme-left actors should not be part of governing coalitions or holding state offices.
